PUNE, May 8: The Pune municipal administration is contemplating a proposal to reserve the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for international and first class cricket matches while providing facilities for the local leagues at nearby Baburao Sanas sports ground.

This would reduce the pressure on the Nehru Stadium and enable better upkeep of the ground to match international standards, according to Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor.

Kapoor said he had visited the stadium premises and also discussed the issue with senior officials at the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC after coming across reports in the local media on the sorry state of the ground and other related facilities at the stadium.

The officer said he had also issued orders to the civic building department to accord top priority to repairs and maintenance at the stadium. A proposal for appointing a competent manager for the stadium would be put up for approval of the municipal commissioner.

Some immediate measure like daily cleaning of the toilets, regular upkeep of the spectator galleries and stands had been initiated. Besides, a couple of dustbins were being introduced in the stadium premises and scrap material lying all over the place was being removed.

The Sanas sports ground would be given a facelift while a plan was being chalked out to promote sports activities at the General Arunkumar Vaidya Memorial Stadium at Bhawani Peth.
