Navy romp into final

MAY 8: Indian Navy, Lonavla, maintained their unbeaten run in the city when they scored a comprehensive 97-65 victory over BEG, Kirkee, in a semi-final encounter of the Savio Open State-level Basketball Tournament, sponsored by Colgate and Killer Jeans, at the Don Bosco quadrangle, Matunga, on Monday.

Midway through the Navy-BEG match, it was evident that BEG would be unable to match the superior offence and defence of their fellow servicemen. Their defence had too many holes for comfort and their hands were further tied by the mercurial ball-handler Sambhaji Kadam ringing up four fouls in the first session.

The match saw some quick exchanges. For Navy, guard Joshy Varghese harnessed a marauding offence with accurate passing. The troika of veteran AP Singh, DK Mali and pivot Vinod Kumar was too hot for BEG to handle.
