The importance of marital ties
As usual, the summer vacations are on and the marriage season is in full swing. In fact, people are so busy with arranging or attending marriages that they do not seem to have time for public engagements; not even the agitation for bifurcation of the Nashik district to create a separate Malegaon district.
However, the agitators found that people and activists were too busy in attending/arranging marriages to participate in the agitations. Consequently, the action committee, which also includes local Shiv Sainiks, postponed its agitation.
Breaking marriages
Andwith so many marriages taking place, there are instances of marital ties being broken even before they are tied up.
Near Manmad, a groom and his family members and relatives were beaten up and driven out of the marriage pandal by the relatives of the bride when they insisted on dowry before tying the knot.
In yet another incident, an attempt by a groom to marry for the second time, was foiled in Nehru Nagar, when the first wife charged into the marriage hall minutes before the chanting of mantras. Armed with photographs and accompanied with witnesses, the marriage hall became a wrestling match between relatives from both sides.
However, it is not that only men dupe their wives. In another case, a married woman who had deserted her husband after three months of their marriage in 1995, attempted to marry for the second time without divorcing her first husband. The husband and his relatives stormed the marriage hall with policemen to teach a lesson to the lady, who had reportedly left her in-laws becauseshe did not like her husband8217;s family members.
Caste as defence
The Akhil Bharatiya Safai Mazdoor Congress led by Pratapkumar Mehrolia has threatened to launch an agitation in support of the former social welfare minister Babanrao Gholap.
Gholap is facing charges of fraud and resigned recently. According to Mehrolia, Gholap had been targeted by his adversaries because he belongs to a lower caste. Gholap incidentally belongs to the cobbler community recognised as a scheduled caste.
It is a typical case of a caste being used as a shield to protect one8217;s wrong doings.
