After asking Muslims to scale down Eid celebrations and urging Imams to condemn the Mumbai terror attacks in Friday prayers, several Muslim outfits are now coming together to organise peace gatherings across the country on Sunday.

Simultaneous candle-light vigils are being planned in 12 places across the country, including at ground zero in Mumbai, which is likely to see the participation of intellectuals and prominent figures from the community.

“This is a spontaneous reaction from the community. The peace gatherings will be held to show solidarity with the affected people,” All-India Muslim Personal Law Board Working Committee member and chairman of the Delhi Minorities Commission Kamal Farooqui told The Sunday Express.

Muslim organisations like the Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind, Milli Council and Jamaat-e-Islami-Hind and some NGOs have confirmed their participation in the gatherings to be held at Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Faizabad and Delhi.

Organisers of the peace gatherings said the idea was to drive home the point that terrorists were enemies of Islam also and the community had no sympathy for them. The use of Muslim names by terror outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammad, Indian Mujahideen, Deccan Mujahideen would also be condemned.
