Chairman of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), N.R. Narayana Murthy, on Saturday came down heavily on the recent move of the Union HRD Ministry to reduce the fees in the IIMs. ‘‘It’s a retrograde step and is ill-advised. The decision is not based on data or logic,’’ Murthy, who is also the Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys, told reporters in Bangalore at an event to honour him with brand-comm’s Most Admired Business Leader Award.
He added: ‘‘I don’t think there is a hidden agenda but somebody has advised him (Union HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi) wrongly,’’ on slashing the annual fees from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 30,000.
‘‘A large part of the respect India has earned outside has been through students of these institutions. Nobody should do anything, even unwittingly come in the way of these great institutions which are going from strength to strength,’’ was his refrain.
‘‘The Minister’s initiative to reduce the fees worries all of us. My view is that we don’t need subsidy for higher education,’’ he said.
Murthy said it costs Rs 3 lakh per student per annum at IIM-A and obviously Rs 3 lakh is not a pittance. ‘‘If you want good quality education, you have to spend Rs 3 lakh,’’ Murthy said, adding that quality of education at the IIMs was bound to suffer because of the move.
Murthy said the Government had taken the step without any consulting stakeholders of the IIMs such as the chairmen and directors. He said he had met Joshi in January and given him data. ‘‘But I don’t think they have taken it into consideration,’’ he said.
