CR trains delayed

Central Railway locals on the harbour line ran 15 to 20 minutes late on Thursday morning following two separate incidents which occurred between Kurla and Chunabhatti. In the first incident at around 5.10 am, a rail panel fell off a goods train, damaging a rail point and blocking tracks near Kurla station. Minutes later, a tower wagon used for repairing overhead wires stopped near Chunabhatti station due to a mechanical fault. Both faults were rectified by around 7.30 am, a CR spokersperson informed.

Workshop on AIDS today

The Sydenham College of Commerce has organised a seminar on children living in the world of AIDS on Friday, March 6, in the college Babasaheb Ambedkar auditorium between 9 am and 6 pm. The workshop will be attended by 200 participants comprising students and teachers from various colleges in Mumbai affiliated to the Mumbai and SNDT universities. Participants will be addressed by eminent doctors, professors and social scientists from the Tata Instituteof Social Sciences, JJ group of hospitals and directorate of health services, Maharashtra.

MTNL phone bills delayed

Due to technical reasons, the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) has put off payment of phone bills for the following exchange codes: 616, 617, 630, 646, 650 and 651. An MTNL release informed that the date for payment of these bills had been postponed to March 26.

Iqbal Mirchi’saide quizzed

Sleuths of the Narcotic Cell today brought Iqbal Mirchi’s caretaker Aslam from Panchgani to Mumbai for interrogation after they received information that a huge consignment of contraband was stashed at his residence there.

However, Aslam was let off, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (narcotic cell) A Shinde, as the police failed to incriminating evidence during the interrogation. No contraband was seized in the raids carried out last evening, he confirmed. Iqbal Merchant, alias Mirchi, had earlier been accused of smuggling drugs into the country. He was later exonerated by a London Court. Acting on a tip-off, the Mumbai and Satara police in a joint operation raided Mirchi’s premises at Panchgani. Other places raided included his residence, a petrol pump, a gas agency and a hotel.

Carnatic music conference

A two-day music conference will be held on Carnatic music at the Fine Arts Cultural Centre in Chembur to celebrate its silver jubilee. The conference which will be heldon March 7 and 8 will have lectures, demonstrations and theme concerts. The main attraction of the conference is the music concert by Dr Radha Venkatachalam, O S Thiagarajan and Prof T V Gopal Krishnan.
