Kalki to be felicitated

The centenary celebration of Kalki8217; R Krishnamurthy, novelist, freedom fighter, journalist, reformist and scholar will be celebrated on June 15 at Shanmukhananda Hall, Matunga. Jointly organised by the South Indian Education Society SIES, Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the celebration will be inaugurated by the former President R Venkataraman.

On this occasion, a classical music programme based on songs by Kalki will be presented by playback singer Hariharan and his mother Alamelu Mani along with Anandhi, Vijaya and Gowri from the Kalki family. Dancer Vani Ganapathy and her troupe will also present a dance performance choreographed from Kalki8217;s famous novel Sivakamiyin Sabadam.

Winner of the Sahitya Academy Award, Kalki8217; Krishnamurthy participated in freedom struggle and was imprisoned in 1941. He joined a Gandhi ashram in Tiruchengode run by late C Rajagopalachari and helped him to edit journals intended to promoteawareness on the evils of alcoholism. Several of his works have been translated into English, German and Russian.
