
Astronomy olympiad
The Euro-Asian Astronomical Society organises the International Astronomy Olympiad every year in Russia for students under 18. This year, the Olympiad will be held in October. The Indian team will be chosen by the Astronomical Society of India in collaboration with National Council of Science Museums, various planetariums and Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). The eligibility criteria for participation is: group I (students upto Std X and under 16 years as on October 31, 1999) and group II (students upto Std XI and XII and under 18 years as on October 31, 1999).
The preliminary selection test for students of Mumbai region will be conducted at Nehru Science Centre, Dr E Moses Road, Worli on April 29 at 2 pm. The test will be based on physics, mathematics and astronomy. Students selected will appear for the all India level selection test, to be conducted in May. The final selection will be made on the basis of this test, and 30 students will attend anorientation camp at Nehru Science Centre in June before the team is picked for the Olympiad.

New Chief of Staff takes over
Rear Admiral Jagjit Singh Bedi AVSM VSM took over as Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command on Monday at the command headquarters. He was formerly Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (policy and plans) at naval headquarters, New Delhi.
Rear Admiral Bedi has held various operational, staff and training appointments. His sea commands include ships like INS Atul, Bedi, Udaygiri, Ranvir and the aircraft carrier Viraat. He has been officer-in-charge Naval Signal School and commanding officer of the naval academy.
Communication festival
The Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC), a communication and journalism school under the umbrella of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), will host Article 19, a national-levelcommunication festival for graduate and post-graduate students of mass communication and journalism.

Storytelling workshop
The Museum Society of Bombay is attempting to revive the art of traditional story telling through clay modelling. A five day workshop will be organised in this regard for children between five and 12 years of age, to be conducted by artist and researcher Prakriti Kashyap. The workshop will be held from May 10 to May 14 from 9.30 am to 12 noon at the Children’s Creative Centre at the museum. Registration forms are available at the museum’s reception desk.
