
Dawood8217;s nephew arrested
The property cell of Mumbai police arrested underworld don Dawood Ibrahim8217;s nephew from a hideout at Mazgaon this evening. Sajid Gulam Mohammed Wagle 28 was arrested from Pathan Chawl off Gunpowder Road at Mazgaon. He has been accused of demanding Rs 1 crore as extortion money from a city businessman. Investigations revealed that Wagle was in direct contact with Dawood8217;s younger brother Anees and key associate Chhota Shakeel. Some city-based gangsters were acting on his behest, said the police.
WR commuter hit by stone
In another stone-throwing incident, Dinesh Mohan Ojha, 32, a resident of Dahisar E was hit by a stone near Andheri on Sunday while travelling on a fast local from Churchgate. He received a minor injury above his right ear. A police complaint was lodged with the Bandra Railway police.
Rly minister to visit stations
Minister of State for Railways Ram Naik will visit WR suburban stations from Vaitarna to Dahanu Road on March 26 during aninspection tour. He will receive memoranda from commuters and passenger associations at all stations on the way. He will also participate in a programme on railway issues at Vapi.
Former IE staffer felicitated
Indian Express staffer Manohar Borkar who retired recently after 21 years of service was given a fond farewell by the kamgars on March 20. Borkar, the first staffer to retire from the new Lalbaug office, scored another first as it was the first time that such a function was organised with active participation of the management. Borkar, who joined the General Administration department as a peon on January 21, 1978, was presented a gold ring, shawl, srifal and flowers. Members of the management and editorial offices spoke in appreciation of his long and loyal service, and he responded warmly with a few words of his own.
ISKCON boat festival at Juhu
ISKCON will celebrate Ram Navami with a boat festival at Juhu Chowpatty on March 25. Former sheriff NanaChudasama, Minister of State for Education Anil Deshmukh and singer Anup Jalota will be present for the festivities.
