Naval technical supervisors protest

February 6: Nearly 800 supervisors of the naval dockyard held a protest gate meeting outside the Lion Gate on Friday. They were protesting the non-implementation of the Fifth Central Pay Commission in full and granting of 100 per cent over time allowance. On the occasion, president of the association R D Shirwadkar and General secretary V Mathew said that the agitation would be further strengthened if their demands were not met.

Bail for accused in Samant case

Raju Baje, an accused in the Datta Samant murder case was today released on bail by Sessions judge S P Kukday. Baje was released on a personal bond of Rs 20,000, along with one surety, due to lack of evidence. Baje was arrested on February 11, 1997 from Ahmedabad after a countrymade weapon was recovered from him. The allegations levelled against Baje are that he was in-charge of one of the groups formed to kill Samant and masterminded the assassination. Baje was represented by Satish Maneshinde andGauri Kulkarni, while special public prosecutor Deshmukh appeared for the state.

Watchman found dead at Andheri

A watchman working for a gas company at MIDC, Andheri east, was found dead today by the police. The body of Jimkant N Jaiswal (28), an employee with Sunbin Gas Services, was found by one Jamaluddin R B Hazam near Darpan Talkies. He was brutally killed by a sharp weapon, sources said.

Food festival at The Orchid

The Orchid, Asia’s first `environment friendly’ hotel has organised its second food festival called Tak-A-Tak from February 4 to 13. Cooking techniques will be demonstrated by Chef Malkani.
