Ganpati pandal catches fire

A Ganpati pandal at Sewri caught fire on Thursday causing slight damage to the idol. The fire broke out at around 3.30 pm at the G D Ambedkar Marg, Prabhudan Thakre Udyan. Three fire engines and two water tankers were pressed into service and the fire was doused in 10 minutes, according to fire brigade officials. The idol, belonging to the Sewri Madhyavibag Sarvajanik Ganpati Mandal, was immediately taken for immersion. The fire is suspected to have been caused due to a short circuit. While the bigger idol was immersed today, another pandal was put up to accommodate the smaller one.

5 Abu Salem gangsters held

Nine gangsters including five members of the Abu Salem gang were arrested and two robbery attempts foiled by crime branch officers on Wednesday. Crime branch officers received intelligence reports that persons planning a bank dacoity were likely to meet near Bharat Restaurant at Vile Parle. A trap was laid at the restaurant and five men arrested. A 7.63bore star pistol with five live rounds, a country made .32 bore revolver with two live rounds, a mobile phone and a Rampuri knife were recovered from them. In the other incident, four men were arrested after a trap was laid at a medical store at Khar.

HC judges appointed

Sakharam Gopalrao Mahajan and Pramod Shantaram Brahme have been appointed judges of Bombay High Court. Their appointments, made by President K R Narayanan, would be effective from the date they assume charge of their office, an official release said. The President also appointed Suresh Kantilal Shah, Neelkanth Vishwanath Dabholkar, Amar Jeet Singh Natharam Bagga and Dinkar Shankarrao Zoting as additional judges of the HC for two years, it added.
