
Trader hurt in stone throwing
A 32-year-old businessman was struck by a stone above his right eye while travelling in a local on Thursday night.
According to the railway police, Maganraj Kapurchand Jain, a resident of Borivli E, was travelling in a Vashi-CST local. The train was moving between Chembur and Tilaknagar stations and he was standing near the door when the stone struck him. He was rushed to the Bhabha Municipal Hospital at Kurla and discharged after first aid. Jain lodged a complaint with the Kurla railway police. Early on Friday the Kurla police apprehended one Mohammed Anwar Mohammed Akbar, a resident of Kurla, in connection with the stoning.
Chhota Shakeel gangster killed in encounter
A Chhota Shakeel hitman was killed in an encounter with police at Lower Parel early on Friday. On a tip-off, a special squad comprising inspector Kadar Khan and sub-inspector A M Pol and some constables laid a trap near Hanuman Gulli, under the jurisdiction of N M Joshi Marg policestation. Hitman Sallahuddin Mohammed Ansari 23 was to meet an accomplice in the area. When he arrived at around 1.30 am he was asked to surrender. But he opened fire at the patrol from a revolver. In the subsequent exchange of fire he was wounded, claimed police. Ansari was rushed to KEM Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.
Plastic firms appeal against notification
Manufacturers have appealed against the state government8217;s recent notification making it obligatory for manufacturers of virgin polythene carry bags to increase thickness of the bags from 10 to 20 microns. In a statement, the manufacturers have urged the government to cancel the notification dated March 8, 1999, saying it will lead to the unemployment of approximately 25 lakh labourers in the industry. The manufacturers said use of litter as an argument to ban use of plastics is short-sighted. Plastic waste is less than 0.55 per cent of municipal waste and of that, the carry bag is just 0.15 per cent, they said.Citing example of other countries, manufacturers said Africa uses 8 microns to manufacture carry bags, East Asia 10 microns and Europe 13 microns.
Nominations for Marathi film awards
Marathi film stars Ajinkya Dev, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Mohan Joshi, Usha Naik, Alka Athaley and Suhas Joshi were among those nominated for the 36th Maharashtra State Marathi Film Festival awards, said Cultural Affairs Minister Pramod Navalkar today. Raatra Aarambh, Aandhala Sakshidar, Tu Tithe Mi, Hasari, Shandhyug, Gharsansaar and Ashi Dnyaneshwariquot; are seven Marathi films that figured in the list of nominees for the best movie award to be given away at a function in Shanmukhanand hall on April 30.
