Samajwadi Party president and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today handed out tips on election management to his party cadre to prepare them for the forthcoming general elections and to ensure that the party ‘‘secures at least 60 seats in Uttar Pradesh’’.

Addressing party workers here this afternoon, Mulayam told them to concentrate on the voters’ lists ‘‘which have irregularities’’. ‘‘The names of members of one family have been scattered over three or more polling stations and several names are missing. It is your duty to ensure that each member knows where to cast his vote and does not miss the opportunity, otherwise our campaign will go waste. The verification should be completed by March 20,’’ he said.

Mulayam, who spent most of his time in New Delhi after taking over as Chief Minister in August last year, realises he has to be careful to keep his party cadre happy to ensure their active participation in the poll process. ‘‘I know your jobs have not been done and many of you could not meet me since the government was formed, but this is not the time to air your grievances because the Lok Sabha elections are extremely crucial for us,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, actress Jayaprada, who was formerly with the TDP, made an appearance at today’s meeting and announced her decision to join the SP. Addressing party workers, she said she was impressed with Mulayam and Amar Singh’s style of functioning. ‘‘I am impressed with their style of working and their secular outlook, and I have decided to work for the SP as an ordinary party worker. I have not come here for any post or position,’’ she added.

Aware of reports saying Muslims were disenchanted with the party, the SP decided to counter the ‘‘false propaganda’’ by distributing handouts among the workers highlighting the work done for the welfare of the community during Mulayam’s regime and telling the party cadre to spread the word among the community.
