PUNE, April 26: In a significant move, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation MSRTC has issued orders to purchase 1,000 buses from TELCO and nearly 2-2,500 buses will be on the roads by the year-end, MSRTC Chairman Girish Bapat said today. He also did not rule out a fare hike due to the increased diesel rates.

A Rs 100-crore loan will be taken from Tata Finance for purchasing the buses, Bapat said adding that a string of stern measures would also rejuvenate the State Transport ST service. This includes a drive to check corrupt officials who allegedly purchase their own private buses and eat into the State Transport ST passenger traffic.

BJP MLA Bapat who took over as MSRTC chairman was instrumental in averting the stir by ST buses, told media persons at an informal meeting that 15 district offices of the ST will be now connected by the wireless. The proposal had been pending for one-and-a-half years, Bapat said adding that the district offices will be connected via wireless within a month now.

The MSRTC has also proposed training programmes for ST bus drivers apart from computerising the examination process. While drivers have appeared for the driving test, tn marks have yet to be allotted. Bapat said that the venue of the examination will be declared a day prior to the test to avoid corrupt practices.
