In the absence of clinching evidence, according to sources, the special Parliamentary Committee probing the MPLAD Fund scam has stopped short of recommending expulsion of the five Lok Sabha MPs caught in the on-camera expose conducted by a TV channel. The report is said to have recommended milder action against the MPs.
Headed by Congress MP Kishore Chandra Deo, the panel submitted its report to LS Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today. It is expected to be tabled in Parliament tomorrow.
In the cash-for-query sting, however, 11 MPs, including one from the Rajya Sabha, were expelled from Parliament. They were found guilty by the Pawan Kumar Bansal Committee of the Lower House and the Ethics Committee chaired by Karan Singh of the Upper House.
Both the exposes hit Parliament during the last Winter session. Following the allegations of misuse of MPLAD Fund against the five MPs, the Speaker had asked them to stay away from House proceedings and meetings of Parliamentary Committees till a decision was taken. The five MPs caught in the controversy in December, last, are former Congress CM of Goa Churchil Alemao, former Union Minister and BJP MP Fagan Singh Kulaste, Ramswaroop Koli BJP, Paras Nath Yadav Samajwadi Party and Chandrapratap Singh BJP. Singh was expelled in the cash-for-query scam.
