The Madhya Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session ended on Wednesday with members unanimously passing a Bill that increases their salary, allowances and pension.

The Madhya Pradesh State Assembly Member Salary, Allowances and Pension (Amendment) Bill, 2007, was passed without any discussion. CPI(M) MLA Ramlakhan Sharma, the only MLA who could have opposed the Bill, was not present in the House.

Legislators who got a salary of Rs 4,000 will now get Rs 9,000 while their allowances have been raised to Rs 12,000 from Rs 8,000.

Monthly pension has been doubled to Rs 6,000 while medical allowance has been increased to Rs 3,000 from Rs 2,000. The cost of the revised salary, allowances and pension to the exchequer will be Rs 6.63 crore.

The Bill attributes the need for revision to inflation. It says if a member of the Legislative Assembly has served for more than five years he will get an additional pension of Rs 200 per month. On the member’s death, his family will get a pension of Rs 3,000 per month. The Bill replaces “One First Class fare” with “One First Class AC or AC sleeper fare” in the sub-section (2) of Section 5 of the original Act.
