Residents of Mount Kailash Apartments, located in the affluent end of East of Kailash, are up in arms against a government run liquor vend in the local community market.
Having agitated for years against the 8220;nuisance8221; caused due to the liquor store, the residents had managed, through appeals to the Lieutenant Governor and chief minister, to have the vend relocated to another spot in Nehru Place. However, after a short-lived respite, the vend is scheduled to re-open, much to the annoyance of the residents in this area.
8220;We have no opposition to the consumption of liquor but the fact is this particular vend is a bit of a nuisance. Firstly, it is illegal because it is located a stone8217;s throw away from two schools, the Delhi Public School and an MCD school,8221; 75-year-old Satish Vaish, a resident of Mount Kailash for over 20 years now, said.
The liquor vend8217;s proximity to two schools is serious enough; however what rankles the residents even more is the traffic bottleneck this area becomes during evening hours. 8220;There is just one road leading up to the apartments, and every evening it is blocked by people who buy liquor and sit in their cars and drink. They play loud music, pass lewd remarks, eve tease, and insist upon using the road as a public toilet. Once, they are done they throw their bottles into our compounds and leave,8221; Vaish said.
A DDA colony, Mount Kailash Apartments was built in the early 8217;80s and many residents say it is now quite popular with senior citizens.
8220;This is largely a senior citizen8217;s colony,8221; R S Grover 75 said. Grover is also quick to point to an old DDA brochure that describes the community market as a small market meant to cater exclusively to the needs of the residents. 8220;The brochure clearly says the market will cater to needs such as provisions. This market is not designed to accommodate the crowds that come with a liquor shop,8221; he said.
The Mount Kailash Resident8217;s Welfare Association has appealed to the chief minister to put an end to this nuisance. 8220;We have submitted yet another petition to the CM8217;s office, signed by all the residents, asking her to intervene in this situation,8221; another long-time resident and former government employee said.
