CHANDIGARH, July 15: The National Commission of Women will put up candidates for all the Lok Sabha seats in the next Parliamentary polls. Reacting sharply to the withdrawal of the Women8217;s Reservation Bill, the chairperson of the Commission, Mohini Giri said the Commission will begin the process of identifying future candidates and will ensure that all constituencies have potentially winning women candidates. An election corpus is also being envisaged for such candidates.

Mohini Giri, whose term as the chairperson is about to conclude in two days, said the programme has been formalised and the spade work for putting up candidates has been done to ensure that after she relinquishes charge, the next chairperson would adhere to the programme.

When questioned on whether the Commission would also consider supporting candidates of other political parties, she remarked that depending on the candidate and her prospects, the idea could be explored.

An election fund of Re 1 per month would be collected from women all over the country and by the end of the year, an election corpus would be existent.

She criticised the attempt to introduce religion-based reservation in the women8217;s bill.quot; If there is no reservation for Muslim men, why should their be reservation for Muslim women?quot;, she questioned.

quot; The members who tore the Bill in the House should have been suspended. In case a student tears an answer sheet in the classroom, the student is suspended immediately, then why not the Parliamentarians?quot; she asked.

Mohini Giri met the Prime Minister after the incident and expressed sympathy for a Prime Minister who could not even introduce a Bill in the Parliament.
