Policeman suspended, probe ordered

Assitant Sub-Inspector ASI of Mohali Police Ranjit Singh was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau VB on Tuesday for allegedly accepting Rs 2,500 as bribe.

Mohali SSP Jatinder Singh Aulakh has released his suspension order and initiated a departmental inquiry against the tainted cop, who was posted at a police station in Phase I, said the Vigilance Bureau DSP Sant Singh Dhaliwal.

He said one Pardeep Kumar, a resident of Phase II had lodged an assault complaint against his housemate Satish Chawla. Singh, who was assigned the investigation of the complaint, arranged a mutual compromise between both the parties, for which he allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 from Kumar. The deal was struck at Rs 5,000 and the first installment of Rs 2,500 was paid on the day of compromise and for receiving the remaining amount of Rs 2,500, the ASI called Kumar at Phase I police station this afternoon, said Dhaliwal.

He claimed that no sooner Kumar handed over the cash to the cop near a tea vend outside the police station at 1.30 pm, the VB sleuths caught him. A case under Sections 7, 13 2 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, has been lodged against the cop, who will be produced before a local court tomorrow, added Dhaliwal.

Speaking to Newsline, Mohali SSP Aulakh warned the district police against indulging in corrupt practices. He said corruption and dereliction of duty will not be tolerated and anybody found wanting will be dealt sternly.
