A crowd of over thousand angry people, after a rumour spread that BSF personnel had misbehaved with women, attacked policemen, injuring four of them and snatched away two guns before damaging 11 trucks and buses in Malda district on Monday.

Sagar Saha, Inspector-in charge of Kaliachalk police station, said a group of people from Bhakarpur village, 14 km from here, were returning after namaz on Eid-ul-Azha when the trouble started. Angered by the rumour, a mob of over 1,000 gathered and attacked a police van.

The mob snatched away two guns from the policemen, injured four of them and damaged their van, Saha said. The mob then turned its wrath on vehicles on the National Highway and damaged 11 trucks and buses and set up a traffic blockade for three hours, he added.
