May 27: There were mixed fortunes for Delhi veteran Subhash Sood in the CCI Open Billiards and Snooker tournament, today.

Playing a second-round snooker match that finished late last night Sood found it difficult coping with the pace of the table and the split of the balls and went down tamely to Nishant Dossa in round two of the billiards competition. Dossa won 463-300.

In a third-round snooker encounter, a competitor on the distaff side Sangeeta Hemchand got the better of D Shah 3-1. She won 51-24, 40-31, 40-31, 40-52, 60-23.

Sarang Shroff, snooker international, displayed his prowess with a resounding 777-434 win over Sunil Ghadge achieving breaks of 51, 61, 52, 79, 59 and 56 in the process.

Shabbir Khan upsets

Third seed Shabbir Khan upset second seeded Niranjan Nimkar of Thane Janta Sahakari Bank in a thrilling encounter to win the late Mangesh Narlekar and Sunil Shinde Memorial Thane District Ranking carrom tournament organised jointly by the Smruti Mitra Mandal alongwith the Thane District Carrom Association at Gyanprasarani School, Old Belapur Road, Kalwe.

Shabbir Khan playing a calculated game, mixing attack with defence got the better of Niranjan Nimkar in a three-game tussle. Khan won 11-25, 25-12, 25-21 to win the first District Ranking title of his career. He collected Rs 5,001 and an attractive trophy as rewards for his success.

A major upset marked the quarter-final stage when Robin Sharma ousted top seed and former national champion Sanjay Mande 25-9, 18-25, 25-15.

Junior girl and fourth seed Sujata Haylinge beat second seed Minal Lele to claim the women8217;s singles title.

Sujata won 25-24, 25-16 and like Khan, picked up her first District Ranking title. She picked up Rs 1,501 and trophy.

On her way to the title, Sujata upset top-seeded Shilpa Joshi in a thriller that went to three games. Sujata won 2520, 2-25, 25-7.

Mungekar, Deshmuk shine

A steady batting performance by Sunny Mungekar 50 and Gaurav Deshmukh 45 steered Kamat CC to a massive 186-run victory over Bhatkar CC in the Indian Gymkhana Matunga Invitation cricket tournament, today. Bhatkar8217;s response to Kamat8217;s 228 for seven in the allotted 30 overs was a meagre 42 in 7.5 overs after bowlers Ashish Nare and Prasad Hadkar carried out a demolition job.

Nare claimed six wickets for just 12 runs while Hadkar took four for 19. No Bhatkar batsman moved into double figures.

Nare8217;s display with the ball earned him the man of the match award. Rizvi SC beat New India Assurance by a solitary goal in a WIFA First Division knockout tournament match at the Cooperage, today. Selwyn Leven scored the all-important goal.

RCF win

Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilisers RCF Centre and Shivaji Park Centre won their opening matches in the MCA under-19 summer nets tournament in the memory of Manohar Vishram Sawant, jointly organised by Aarey Cricket Club and Dadar Parsee Zorastrian Club.
