Miscreants on Wednesday set on fire a railway station in the trouble-torn North Cachar Hill district of Assam, causing considerable damage to railway property, including the mechanical signal system.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 pm, while normal life in the hill district was already crippled under the impact of a 36-hour bandh called by the All Dimasa Students’ Union to press its demand for creation of a separate state for the Dimasa tribe. Official sources at Haflong, the district headquarter, said miscreants numbering between 10 and 15 entered the Bagetar railway station, about 5 km from Haflong town, and set on fire the station master’s office, damaging valuable documents.
