ITANAGAR, AUG 3: Two miscreants have chopped off both the hands of a doctor working with the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital here, sending shock waves to the local populace.

Renowned ENT specialist Dr K Zaman, known for his amiable behaviour, was attacked by two persons at his official residence last night, when the incident occurred.

Dr Zaman said that the assailants had intruded into his house at about 7:45 pm and attacked him with dao (a sharp weapon) without any provocation.

He said the miscreants, who had attempted to kill him, chopped off his hands when he got into a scuffle with them.

Meanwhile, family members of the attacked doctor raised the alarm, drawing the attention of his neighbours.

However, in the ensuing mess, the miscreants managed to escaped.

Dr Zaman was immediately taken to the operation theatre and most of the surgical experts of RKM Hospital and Naharlagu General Hospital tried their best to join the two pieces of severed parts, though the micro surgery facilities werenot available here.

Informed of the incident, Chief Minister Mukut Mithi, his Cabinet colleagues and other officials, who were at a dinner party, rushed to the hospital and decided to shift the doctor to a nursing home at Dibrugarh in Assam, where such facilities were available.

But, he could be evacuated only this morning in a Pawan Hans helicopter.

Though the cause of the attack was yet to be ascertained, Dr Zaman said some attendants of a hearing impaired patient had recently urged him to sign a false reimbursement bill, which he did not. That could be the cause of the attack, he said.

Meanwhile, the police apprehended two persons for interrogation and identification by the victim.

Chief Minister Mithi and Home Minister Lijum Ronya, while condemning the brutal act, asked the police to nab the culprits. Former chief minister Gegong Apang also visited Dr Zaman and strongly condemned the attack.

The All Arunachal Pradesh Doctors Association and Arunachal Chamber of Commerce have also condemnedthis act of violence on a doctor who is known to be one of the most efficient ENT specialists in the North Eastern region.

Dr Zaman has been serving R K M hospital for the past 18 years. The secretary of the hospital, Swami Prathamananda Maharaj, and other staff were deeply shocked at the incident and decided to close the hospital till the situation improved.
