The Cabinet today approved a rejig of existing welfare schemes for minorities into a new 15-point programme requiring that 15 per cent of funds in various programmes be henceforth earmarked, wherever possible, for the minorities.
The objective of the recast is to focus action sharply on issues intimately linked with the social, educational and economic uplift of minorities. The outlays are being earmarked in certain schemes in such a way that their progress is monitorable.
The revised programme is also aimed at prevention of communal riots, prosecution of communal offences and rehabilitation of riot victims, a government statement said.
The existing 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities was formulated in May 1983 covering different aspects for state action, and is known as the 8216;8216;Prime minister8217;s 15-point programme for the Welfare of Minorities.8217;8217;
