Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy on Friday proposed a joint visit with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to Langpih, the disputed village on the Meghalaya-Assam border that the two neighbouring states are claiming as their own.

Roy’s statement is significant, as there are reports that Gogoi plans to visit Langpih to oversee developmental projects in the area.

Roy said: “I prefer a joint visit to Langpih with Tarun Gogoi, before settling the boundary dispute amicably. I am glad that he is visiting the area. But it would be better if both of us visit it together. Then, I can show him that the area constitutionally belongs to Meghalaya.”

Langpih has a total of 74 villages of Garo and Khasi people. Last week, two Assam ministers had laid foundation stones of a health sub-centre, an inspection bungalow and a forest guard quarter at Langpih, even as Meghalaya protested saying that Assam was encroaching upon its area.On the other hand, the Assam Government has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs opposing Meghalaya’s stand.
