Against the backdrop of a fast emerging consensus to take Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear programme, US Ambassador to India David Mulford today held a meeting with National Security Advisor M K Narayanan.

Mulford is said to have explained the US position, the ongoing diplomatic efforts, while also discussing the course it seeks to adopt after Iran removed IAEA seals on equipment which could be used for uranium enrichment.

India has been quiet over the past couple of days when the crisis has been unfolding in various important capitals across the globe. Despite having voted against Iran at the IAEA in September, New Delhi has been favouring a negotiated settlement of the problem. A vote on the matter was averted in November when the board of governors had met with an understanding to give more room for talks.

It was Narayanan who had made an unpublicised visit last November to London, ahead of the IAEA board of governors8217; meeting and discussed the issue with officials from the EU-3, US and Russia.
