Mayor Satam appeals for funds

May 14: Mayor Nandu Satam has appealed for funds to augment the Mayor8217;s Fund to help needy people from across the metropolis. Satam has sought the support of wealthy individuals and charity-aid organisations urging them to come forward and contribute generously.8220;There are several funding institutions and persons who come forward to help in emergencies. Being the first citizen, I call upon them to extend a helping hand,8221; Satam said.

The mayor8217;s office is besieged with requests from underprivileged persons seeking aid for heart, kidney and cancer operations among others. However, although their need is several times larger, the mayor8217;s office is able to part with meagre amounts upto Rs 5,000 in individual cases.

Though he did not give any details on how he plans to increase the fund, he said that he would hold entertainment aid shows on the lines of previous mayors.

Former commissioner R T Kadam had organised a charity show at Andheri Sports Complex. However, some of the corporators have not yet paidthe amount they had promised to Kadam. Satam said he would take these corporators to task. 8220;As the mayor, I have the right to ask them,8221; he said.
