MUMBAI, JUNE 6: Matka king Ratan Khatri was arrested by officers of the Special Service Branch (SSB) last night for running an illegal gambling den at Bhandup.

According to police sources, Special Service Branch staff raided a hutment in Subhash Nagar, Nohar Road, Bhandup (East) and 18 men, including Khatri, were arrested. Police also seized a telephone with 14 illegal lines, a television set, six mobile phones, six tape recorders, cassettes and calculators valued at Rs 1.09 lakh.

Police said that the accused were caught accepting bets on the ongoing test match between South Africa and England.

However, the main accused in the case, Prashant Vaidya, is said to be absconding, according to police sources.

Khatri and his associates were produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate R D Kate. Ratan Khatri was later released on a bail of Rs 10,000.

The seventeen others were released on a bail of Rs 1,000 each.
