CHANDIGARH, July 20: Manipur Olympic Association will conduct the North-East Games in the third week of September to test the infrastructure raised for the V National Games to be held in Imphal from October 4 to 14.

Gymnastic Federation of India secretary P S Virk, who attended the Games’ Techinical Conduct Committee meeting held on July 8 disclosed that, “In the absence of wooden floor, it was decided to have crash mat for landing to avoid any injury to the gymnasts.” The GTCC has opened the Letter of Credit to import gymnstic equipment from Zaffarson and Friston of Holland. It was assured that the imported equipment would reach Imphal well before the National Games.

The GFI secretary said, “The equipment would be first tested before being used in the competitions. In case the delivery is received just a few days before the National Games, the technical committee would test the equipment. As per the federation rules, the gymnasts should use the equipment for sufficient period before the equipment is put to use for competitions.”

Meanwhile, the GFI has appointed GS Bawa as the competition director of the gymnastic competitions. More than 75 technical officials would supervise the gymnstic events.

Gymnastic teams from Chandigarh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Service, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, West Bengal and hosts Manipur would compete for the top honours in the men’s section.

Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tripura, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and hosts Manipur have qualified in the women’s section.

All venues of the National Games are nearing completion. More than 800 single story huts have been constructed to accommodate around than 10,000 sportspersons and technical officials, according to Virk and SM Bali, secretary general of the Handball Federation of India.

Bali, who is also the joint secretary of the Indian Olympic Association and attended the GTCC meeting said here today, that synthetic surface would be used for handball competitions. The finals would be played in the Indoor Stadium.

JK, Punjab qualify
According to Bali, Services, Manipur, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Bihar in the men’s section and Punjab, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Assam and Kerala would compete in the handball competitions of the National Games.

Regarding the preparations for the Games, Bali said, “The things are moving in the right direction. Ninety per cent of work has been completed.” He said it was decided that all the national campers for the Commonwealth and Asian Games would be airlifted from Delhi. Transit camps for players and officials would be opened at Calcutta, Guwahati and Dimapur. Daily Special deluxe buses would ply from Guwahati to Imphal for participants.
