Man, 2 sons get life term for twin murder

The court of Additional Session Judge RS Rai today awarded life sentences to three persons, a man and his two sons, in a twin murder case, where a couple was shot dead in November 2005 in Bathinda.

The court of Additional Session Judge RS Rai today awarded life sentences to three persons, a man and his two sons, in a twin murder case, where a couple was shot dead in November 2005 in Bathinda.

Ashok Kumar and his sons, Deep Rattan and Amardeep, both in their twenties, were booked for murder, attempt to murder and under a section of the Arms Act on November 8, 2005, after Raj Kumar and his wife Pushpa were shot dead and their son Jatin was injured in firing from a .32 bore licensed weapon.

Raj and Ashok, both brothers, were locked in a property dispute, said advocate Nand Lal Garg, the counsel for rosecution.

The court awarded two sentences of life imprisonment to the three and a fine of Rs 20,000 each. For attempt to murder, besides a fine of Rs 5,000, Ashok got seven years’ imprisonment, while his sons were awarded five years each.

The court also awarded another sentence of three years to Ashok under the Arms Act. The sentences would run concurrently.

“It is good that justice has been done. But today’s verdict also refreshed the disturbing memories of the most unfortunate incident that occurred in my life about three years ago,” said Reema, daughter of the deceased couple and a practicing lawyer in Bathinda.
