A direct confrontation between the most exciting winger and best young defender at Euro 2004 may be the highlight of the Spain v Greece match on Wednesday.

Spain8217;s victory over Russia was inspired by the skill and speed of Vicente, who made life a misery for the Russian defence with his irresistible running down the left. The 22-year-old winger will not enjoy quite so much freedom when he comes up against Yourkas Seitaridis, a 23-year-old right back who could prove to be the defensive revelation of the tournament.

Vicente, who made his international debut in 2001 but failed to make the World Cup squad, came into Euro 2004 after starring for Valencia in their title-winning campaign and scoring the opener in his side8217;s UEFA Cup final victory.

He picked up against Russia where his domestic form left off, creating a series of chances for his forwards, provoking three yellow cards and claiming the man-of-the-match award.

8216;8216;I just tried to do the job I know how to do8217;8217;, said the modest Vicente. 8216;8216;That8217;s my duty.8217;8217;

His ability to beat defenders by coming infield or going out wide to the flanks will be crucial to Spain8217;s game plan against Greece, with coach Inaki Saez determined to attack Otto Rehhagel8217;s side down the flanks.

8216;8216;We need our wingers to beat that flat Greek defence, coming inside the fullbacks as well as outside so they can get the best crosses in8217;8217;, Saez said. 8216;8216;If you just go outside, you find there8217;s another play out there immediately to cover.8217;8217;

There will be plenty of high-quality cover in the Greek defence, starting with the man who has to man-mark Vicente.

Seitaridis showed he was well capable of that job with an impeccable display against Portugal.

He kept Simao Sabrosa out of the game in the first half and made life tough for Cristiano Ronaldo in the second.

It was his run that provoked Ronaldo into giving away a penalty for Greece8217;s second goal and he denied the Manchester United winger space for the remainder of the game.

Time and again, Seitaridis forced Ronaldo out wide, leaving him no option but to play in high, deep crosses that were easily dealt with by the Greek centre-backs. Reuters
