
In a significant turn of events, the Maharashtra government has moved the Supreme Court against a Bombay High Court order giving anticipatory bail to former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya and three others in a case of alleged misapropriation of funds.
In its petition, the state government claimed that the April 10 order of the High Court would adversely affect the ongoing probe. Current BCCI chief Sharad Pawar heads the NCP, a key alliance partner in the state government.
Dalmiya, Nair and former BCCI treasurers Kishore Rungta and Jyoti Bajpai were granted anticpiatory bail by the High Court in a case filed by the BCCI accusing them of diverting about Rs 21 crore from an account by name 8220;World Cup 19968221; operated in a Kolkata branch of the Indian Overseas Bank.
Giving them relief, the HC had observed that 8220;undue haste is writ large in filing the complaint.8221;
The BCCI had filed the case with the Marine Drive police in March accusing them of misappropriating the sum. The HC had asked the state government whether the complainant Niranjan Shah, current BCCI secretary, was not aware of the alleged misappropriation8212;Shah was part of the BCCI when Dalmiya was in office.
The complaint alleged that one K M Choudhary, who worked for Dalmiya8217;s firm and had nothing to do with the Board, had operated the account and transferred about Rs 15 lakh to Kolkata-based S G Traders. Dalmiya, however, had denied all charges, claiming he was being presecuted by the Pawar camp.
