CARLSBAD (US), MARch 1: In a gruelling tournament that produced a final between a pair of forgotten golfers, Jeff Maggert captured the inaugural Matchplay Golf Championship with a million-dollar shot to remember. On the second hole of sudden death and the 146th of the event, Maggert chipped in from 17 feet to defeat Andrew Magee and capture the US$ 1 million first prize.

The event was the first of four in the new World Golf Championships Series, bringing together the best players based on the official World Golf Rankings.Magee missed a 35-foot Birdie putt and was about two feet away when Maggert chose to chip from just off the fringe. His shot had a lot of pace and rimmed around the cup before dropping in.
