CHANDIGARH, Oct 5: Madhav Sund of Government College, Ludhiana and Kirandeep Kaur of MCM DAV College, Chandigarh dominated men’s and women’s section, respectively, on the opening day of the Panjab University Inter-College swimming championship at the PU Swimming Pool, here today. The meet, which otherwise proved to be a lackluster affairs, two new meet records, one each in men’s and women’s category were the only highlight of the day.

Madhav, who got first positions in 200-metre butterfly and 100-metre freestyle events also took gold in the 100-metre backstroke event with a new meet record by improving his own meet mark of 1:11.18 by clocking 1:09.21.

In the women’s group, Kirandeep was far better than other swimmers in the fray and relegated the field to also took part. She had a rich haul of eight gold medals including two in the relay events.

She also had the day’s honour by breaking a new meet record in the 50-metre freestyle event by clocking 34 seconds dead. The old meet record was in the name of Bindia Sareen (34.50), who was pushed to second place today. Bindia timed 35.50 seconds which was well below her best. Her team-mate Bhawna Maheshwari was distant third in 38.62.
