After two days of being in denial, the Lucknow University has finally admitted its mistake: In the august presence of the President, they did indeed award a medal to a wrong student.

But while making the admission on Thursday, the university went into an overdrive of caution 8212; the name of the deserving candidate is yet to be disclosed. It will be subject to a full-scale inquiry and further verification.

Vice-Chancellor A S Brar said, 8220;The mistake was at a clerical level; calculation of total marks of the students. But it was not deliberate.8221; The investigation will be completed within a week, he said.

8220;In the initial probe, it was found that it is someone else who deserves the medal. The name of the student cannot be revealed immediately because investigation is underway,8221; said A K S Chauhan, Examination Controller. nbsp;

Now, Maulshree Shukla of Mahila P G College has claimed that D N Majumdar Memorial Gold Medal 8212; highest percentage in anthropology 8212; should have been conferred on her, but it had been wrongly given to her classmate Nikita Gupta.

On the other hand, the university authorities claim that Maulshree wasn8217;t the deserving candidate either.

Chauhan said the medal conferred on Nikita will be cancelled and would be awarded to the deserving candidate at a ceremony likely to be held in December.

The university, in order not to be bitten twice, has decided to publish the list of the meritorious candidates 15 days before the convocation, which would be started from next year.

8220;If a person had any objection over the names of the medal recepients, he or she could register it with the officials,8221; said Chauhan.

The university awards over 190 medals to both graduate and post-graduate students every year. Some students have complained to the university authorities that they were deprived of the opportunity to receive their medal from the President.

Chauhan said the Rashtrapati Bhawan had given a time of seven minutes for the distribution of the medals. 8220;It was not possible to award medals to all students in that short period. So only a few candidates from BA courses were selected, as most students were from these courses.8221;
