CHAPTER THREE: Ghosh performing with his band at the launch of the album

8220;We don8217;t call them songs, we call them journeys,8221; says Gautam Ghosh, as he introduces his band Gautam Ghosh Collective and his kind of music to the eager crowd at Blues, Connaught Place. Performing at the launch of their third album 3!!!, the three-member band proved that live, impromptu world music could be as popular as rock or pop.

Juggling between a dramatic progression on the keyboard one moment and tribal instruments or temple chimes the next, the multi-instrumentalist connected a chord with the cheering crowd. His first journey not a song, mind you was a tribute to Joe Zawinul, whom Ghosh calls the 8220;father of world music that we know today8221;, with varied vocal improvisations embellished by the rich sound of the soprano saxophone played by Vikas Gautam. Giving instant, eclectic beats was Siddhart Das on the drums and percussion. And as the evening progressed, GGC left no genre unexplored, experimenting on the spot with funk, jazz, reggae and rock and all that lies between.

8220;We believe in producing music 8216;alive8217;, that is why all our acts are unrehearsed and unplanned and our numbers don8217;t follow the conventional verse-chorus pattern. The same holds true for our album 3!!!, which is a recording of our concert in August and consists of 10 journeys,8221; says Ghosh.
