Wizards of Oz

8226; IN the editorial, 8216;Think, boys8217; IE, April 30, you have rightly raised the point that 8220;Australia8217;s success had reduced the scope for excuses. Cricket, in their care, will not stagnate for lack of competition.8221; Kudos to Australia for their hat-trick of World Cup victories. After this, the cricket world must introspect as to why other cricketing nations were unable to beat Australia, despite having many talented individuals. However, the final match played under the cover of darkness raised many an eyebrow. Why did the organisers not fix a reserve day for the final? It was shocking that the last three overs in a World Cup final had to be played in almost complete darkness, when the batsmen were all but invisible to the bowlers. This reduced that match to a farce.

Route causes

8226; THE article, 8216;A million journeys out of Punjab8217; IE, April 27 was a very balanced piece. It has been rightly stressed that people have been travelling out in search of greener pastures from time immemorial and that the increase in illegal immigration from Punjab is linked to the two contradictory trends of increasing agrarian debt and rising prosperity. The energy and potential of the youth need to be channelised in a productive fashion. Unless the government takes care of all the factors causing outmigration sincerely, this multimillion-dollar trade will only continue to grow.

Bite in the title

8226; THE title of the piece, 8216;Left to die and almost killed by dogs, girl child finds new life8217; Newsline, April 28, gives the impression that the child was savaged by dogs. This is utterly untrue. In today8217;s atmosphere, when dogs are being targetted so viciously, it is extremely irresponsible to carry such a misleading title. The child was tied up in a polythene bag by humans, not dogs. She was left to die by humans, not dogs. She was, in fact, not harmed by a single dog. Ignoring the human cruelty in abandoning a helpless baby, thus, the headline would seem to blame the dogs for the child8217;s plight. Kindly do not succumb to easy sensationalism.

8212;Ambika Shukla; People For Animals, New Delhi

8226; THE 8220;almost killed8221; claim in the title was most misleading. It gives the impression that dogs have been up to no good again and only deepens the prejudice against the much-vilified animals, who can8217;t defend themselves. Nowhere does the article state that the dogs had attacked, or injured the child. In fact, the child may have been discovered because of the barking dogs, who had managed to tear the polythene apart. Our 8216;free press8217; has once again created unnecessary hype over stray dogs that could have led to more Bangalore-like mass cullings of dogs. It was truly sad to see that even the Express can stoop to such hype.
