Pulp fiction
8226; Apropos of 8216;Height of deception8217; IE, September 27 K. Subrahmanyam has lucidly countered, point by point, the pulp fiction offered by Musharraf in his book. The general seems set to make a fast buck. He will run for presidency again, hence has got to impress his people about his bravery and wisdom, through his imagined victory over India. The article has rebutted all the issues raised by Musharraf and exposed him as a compulsive liar, whose ego is hugely inflated. Let8217;s ignore him and the book, as making comments may promote the book and the general.

8226; Is Musharraf8217;s book a novel? In that case it should say on the cover in bold letters that the book8217;s characters and story have no resemblance to characters and stories in real life! It just proves that politicians 8212; and the general is certainly one 8212; write books having no factual substance, only because they have axes to grind.

Well-begun, BCCI
8226; In his second innings as head of BCCI, Sharad Pawar has done a commendable job by accommodating cricket administrators even from the camp opposed to him earlier. The Dalmia era had turned Indian cricket into a political akhara. That phase seems to be coming to an end with the new set-up announced by the BCCI on September 27. In the same spirit the newly appointed chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has talked of doing away with regional selectors, who were mostly supposed to take care of their regions and not treat the game as an all-India affair.
8212; G.S. Kulkarni, Delhi
8226; The selection of Dilip Vengsarkar as chairman of the selection committee may turn out to be the best thing to happen to Indian cricket. With a glorious career behind him and as the proprietor of Mumbai8217;s most popular cricket coaching academy, he is the perfect man for the job. Let us hope that he is able to bring stability and talent to the fore and rejuvenate Indian cricket. Vengsarkar8217;s selection also brings an end to the inglorious tenure of Kiran More. Along with Greg Chappel, he created confusion, demoralisation and uncertainty in the Indian ranks, leaving their talent as well as confidence shattered.

Belated clean-up
8226; The recent Supreme Court decision for implementing the suggestions of the J.M. Lyngdoh committee on the conduct of student union elections in universities and affiliated colleges needs to be applauded. The recommendations given by the former CEC will bring transparency into the conduct of student union elections and ensure they are free and fair. Educational institutions are temples of learning that prepare the future citizens as also leaders of the country. Sadly politicisation of college elections has been rampant in recent years.

The real exception
8226; Apropos of the front page photograph of the so-called Congress hall of fame IE, September 28, there is more than one way of singling out the exception. No, this is not a galaxy of Congress presidents and prime ministers, wherein you have pointed out 8220;why Rahul Gandhi8221;. It is a galaxy of the so-called prominent members of the Nehru-Gandhi family. And the real exception is the gentleman with the turban.
