Terror curbs

8226; The article,8217;The Mind of a Terrorist: Beyond Jihad8217; by Nadine Kreisberger IE,

August 15, is analytically well written. She ends with the lines: 8220;Therefore, as long as each member of the community does not break this project of an outside entity and deal directly with its own issues owning and integrating one8217;s shadow, there cannot be any end to the violence we are witnessing.8221; Her warning is clear, that the plot foiled in London is destined to be replicated many more times. Her observation vis-a-vis global jihad and the objective thereof of an ultimate end to the enemies occupying their soil seems to be the cause, but I am afraid that such an objective will remain a distant prospect. Given this, it is going to be nearly impossible to expect each member of the community to break from the precedent, unless there are steps to curb institutions and preachers who indulge in influencing these individuals. For that the affected states 8212; and only the states 8212; will have to play an active role.

Chinese way

8226; Jagmohan8217;s patriotism I-Day truths: with every stride, a slide8217;, IE, August 14 always shows. Unfortunately, he is also always in a minority of one. His I-Day truths are too serious not to be considered. His statistics and advice are unimpeachable, but who amongst us would like to follow them? Our small successes tend to make us wallow in self glorification. The Chinese, on the other hand, when complimented on their achievements always remark, 8220;Oh no, we still have a lot to do.8221; If India were to listen to Jagmohan, it can turn the corner. But from where will it get the commitment to change the realities facing it?

Lie of the land

8226; Your editorial, The idea of India8217; IE, August 15, defending 8220;a white lie8221; deliberately broadcast by Sharad Pawar, the then chief minister of Maharashtra, in regard to the l993 serial blasts, was astounding. Pawar8217;s motive may have have noble, but the act was morally indefensible; and the guilt was compounded when he cunningly pointed 8220;a finger at a southern Indian side terrorist organisation8221;. One would have applauded Pawar if, instead of choosing falsehood, he had shown the courage to strongly appeal to his citizens to treat the terrorist attack as an act of lunacy by the mafia and foreign agents. Would you have justified a similar lie to lessen the impact of 9/11, 7/7 or the latest plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights? Your readers displayed greater integrity when they overwhelmingly said No8217; to Pawar8217;s act of lying in the IE daily poll August 14. How durable will be 8220;the idea of India8221; if it is based on falsehood?

Youthful resolve

8226; Apropos of your editorial, 8216;The idea of India8217; IE, August 15, people of my generation, who have seen India rising from the ashes, standing on its own and taking long strides of confidence forward, wonder what to make of our Independence. For many, Independence Day is no more than another holiday. Politicians discharge this obligations by making long, often meaningless, speeches, complimenting themselves and their party and condemning their rivals. Or newspapers bring out special supplements and TV channels perform their duty by telecasting a patriotic film. And there it ends. The question is: can our youth can come forward with a clear and unwavering resolve to assist in the consistent and all-round development of the nation?
