Light on deal
8226; The Indo-US nuclear deal is rocking Parliament but is there any such thing to fear in it? Why is everybody agitated without understanding all aspects the agreement? Why they are shouting from the rooftop? Look at it this way: a the atomic energy establishment and scientific community, because they feel their toes are being stepped upon; b the Left, because the deal is with America, the citadel of capitalism; c the BJP, because the ruling Congress party will enjoy the fruits of success; d BJP8217;s NDA partners, because they just wish to be counted although they don8217;t fully understand what the deal stands for; e UPA partners, because they want to prove they also exist; f
India8217;s intellectuals, because they think they are superior; and finally g the aam aadmi, because he/she blindly subscribes to whatever the media says. Let8217;s hope there is enough electricity for all! Yes, at least the deal will ensure that.

8226; It is sad to see a strategic affairs expert like C. Raja Mohan abandon his professional objectivity on the Indo-US nuclear deal while accusing the main opposition party of 8220;playing politics with history8221; 8216;The house they all built8217;, IE, Aug 4. My concerns are of an ordinary Indian, unconnected with any party, who would like to see India move ahead on its own steam with pride as a country that knows its own national interests. My understanding is that most Indian nuclear scientists have opposed certain aspects of the deal which will rob the country of its manoeuverability when the crunch comes.

Cola petition
8226; We know the government is silent on the matter of unsafe colas. However, when almost in a unanimous voice all parties wish to impose a ban on soft drinks, I wonder where our honorable Supreme Court is.

Hezbollah to LeT
8226; RANJAN GUPTA 8216;Israel8217;s loss of innocence8217;, IE, Aug 4 seems ill-informed. The situation in Israel, which faces the threat of Hizbollah, bears with that of India, which is facing threat from terrorist organisations like LeT and Jaish, supported and sponsored by Pakistan.

Bofors done
8226; This refers to Shekhar Gupta8217;s interview with Arun Singh IE, July 31. It is heartening to know that Arun Singh still considers Rajiv Gandhi a great prime minister 8220;one of the very, very few prime ministers who had both vision and power8221;. However, those words are of no significance to our Opposition politicians. It is Arun Singh8217;s talk of Bofors that attracts them. The BJP, which headed the NDA government, had a good chance to investigate the Bofors scam when it was in power. Bofors is dead and gone. Let us talk of the live dangers that confront us. The question that confronts us is this: How do we clean up the ailing political system?
