LONDON, SEPT 3: Australia’s Darren Lehmann weighed in with the top score of the game as leaders Yorkshire Phoenix beat Sussex Sharks by 49 runs in the English National League on Sunday.
The 30-year-old captain of South Australia outgunned compatriot Michael Bevan with a typically aggressive innings of 80 as Yorkshire made 192 for eight from their 45 overs. Gavin Hamilton finished unbeaten on 57.
Sussex were well in the hunt while Bevan (67) and captainChris Adams (47) were together.
But they collapsed to 143 all out in 35.3 overs, with Hamilton taking five for 34 to add to his half-century.
Yorkshire, who now lead the table by six points, play their final game against Kent under the Canterbury floodlights on Tuesday.
Northamptonshire Steelbacks (195 for nine) moved into second place with a five run victory over Kent Spitfires at Northampton.
India’s Rahul Dravid hit the top score of 68 in Kent’s reply before the Spitfires were all out off the last ball for 190.
In another thrilling finish at New Road, Worcestershire Royals (188 for eight) saw their remaining title hopes dashed as Lancashire Lightning snatched a dramatic two-wicket win off the last ball.
In division two, Nottinghamshire Outlaws boosted their promotion prospects with a 63-run victory over champions Surrey Lions.
Darren Bicknell (115) and Jason Gallian (85) put on 196 forthe first wicket as Notts piled up an imposing 288 for four. Nadeem Shahid made an unbeaten 109 in Surrey’s 225 for three.
Despite Australian Michael Di Venuto’s 84, Derbyshire Scorpions (189) went down by 44 runs to Warwickshire Bears (233 for eight) at Edgbaston.
Glamorgan Dragons missed the chance of climbing into third place after losing by four runs against Essex Eagles at Southend.
The Eagles piled up 289 for five on the back of half-centuries from Steve Peters (73 not out), Will Jefferson (65) and Graham Napier (52).
But Steve James (88 not out), Keith Newell (78) and Matthew Maynard (61) took the Welsh county to the brink of victory before last man Owen Parkin was bowled off the final ball by Ashley Cowan with four runs needed for a tie.
In the county championship, Hampshire kept alive theirchances of avoiding relegation with a six-wicket victory over Durham thanks to an unbeaten 119 from Will Kendall.
