CHANDIGARH, JULY 27: Lecturers from various government schools of Punjab today continued with their chain hunger strike outside the office of the Director, Public Instructions Secondary, for the second day today.

Harbans Singh, a lecturer in Government Senior Secondary School, Town Hall, Amritsar, Tarlochan Singh and Kabal Singh of GSSS, Ghaggabuha, are presently observing the fast. Lecturers from Bathinda district will observe the fast from tomorrow. The protestors are demanding that the promotion to the post of the principal P.E.S.-II should take into consideration the present strength of lecturers and headmasters in the ratio of 80 and 20.

The other demands of the members include the grant of practical allowance to lecturers taking practical classes of Ten Plus One and Ten Plus Two students and gazetted class-II status. State president of the Union, Jiwan Parkash Sharma, said the experience of the lecturer for direct selection to the post of PES-II by the Punjab Selection Services Commission should be taken at seven years. While, the experience in the case of promoted lecturers, should be taken at four years of service as master plus three years as lecturer.

He said that their demands were genuine and have already been granted by the Punjab government on April 24, 1998. He said they would continue with their protest till their demands were met with.
