MUMBAI, June 20: Cartoonist R K Laxman today unveiled his latest book. Called 50 years of Independence through the eyes of R K Laxman, the book is a collection of around 250 cartoons reflecting the passage and the trauma of India in the 50 years after Independence.
Speaking at the function, Laxman remarked the leaders may not have improved the common man8217;s life quality, but their countless gaffes have certainly improved the quality of cartooning in India. 8220;While the whole nation waited with bated breath for utopia, I sat in a corner biting my nails. For in an utopia, there would be no place for a cartoonist,8221; he mused.
Chief guest Bal Thackeray admiring the 8220;punch and pinch8221; of Laxman8217;s caricature said, 8220;He has wonderful models to work on Indian politicians.8221; The book was released by Governor P C Alexander, who rued that the genre of cartoonists who do not merely draw but also comment, is fading away. 8220;But Laxman will never tire or retire,8221; he said.
