The Eranakulam district authorities on Wednesday recovered 15.65 acres of land at Nedumbassery from the possession of controversial lottery king Santiago Martin. The plot was originally leased to Toshiba Anand about 40 years back.
District Collector A P M Mohammed Hanish said Revenue Minister K P Rajendran and Fisheries Minister S Sarma would visit the site in a week and take a decision on how to utilise the plot. Many projects, including ornamental fish farming, which can provide employment to hundreds of people, will be considered, he added.
In 1967, the land was given to Toshiba Anand for manufacturing electric machines. Later, it changed hands many times, but all for industrial purposes as the lease agreement stipulates. A row had erupted after a Crompton Greaves factory, which had taken the plot on lease, handed it over to Navaneeth Hotels Pvt Ltd owned by Martin.
On July 9, Revenue Secretary Niveditha P Haran issued orders to take over the land citing that the lessee had violated the conditions of lease. An oxygen unit which was functioning from the land with the permission of Crompton Greaves had also been closed down. However, the fate of a place of worship on the premises will be decided in consultation with the Government.
