NEW DELHI, November 12: If the number of people breaking barriers, getting lathi-charged by the Delhi Police, trying to get into to see the Sansui Viewer8217;s Choice Movie Awards 1998, held this evening at IG Stadium, were any indication then the show was a roaring success.
The gates leading inside the stadium were shut very early, leaving hoardes of people clutching their invites in hand. The awards ceremony, itself, despite the presence of a number of Bollywood stars, was marred by a bad sound system, disorganisation and the films which were nominated were stale releases from last year.
The awards should have been called the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai awards, given the number of prizes that went into Karan Johar8217;s kitty for his maiden venture. After a point, even Johar got tired of coming upto the stage and sent other people up to collect the trophies on his behalf. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai collected awards for Best Playback Male Singer, Best Playback Female Singer, Best Dialouge and Best Choreography. But, what brought the audience to their feet was the appearance of Dev Anand to collect the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dev, natty as always in a yellow scarf, went on to say how glad he was that the award was being given to him in Delhi. The fillers, interspersed between the awards, had some of the top stars in Bollywood like Akshaye Khanna, Aishwarya Rai, Aftab, Anil Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and Sonali Bendre dancing to their hit numbers from various films. Rai was the obvious star of the evening with her jhatkas and matkas and got the maximum claps and whistles.
