PATIALA, DEC 5: The total knee replacement camp, the first of its kind to be organised in the city, proved to be a big draw where 90 patients were examined by Dr Yash Gulati and Dr Gurdeep Singh, orthopaedic surgeons of repute.

Dr Gurdeep Singh said 15 patients had been selected for performing the total knee replacement operations. The surgeries would be performed at the Amar Hospital by Dr Gulati.

Dr Gulati addressed the members of the Indian Medical Association at the Government Medical College. The meeting was attended by over a100 members and orthopaedic surgeons of Patiala and nearby towns.

Gulati elaborated on the problem of backache and the benefits of total knee replacement.

Dr Gurdeep Singh said due to the advent of new scientific techniques, patients who were suffering from osteo-arthritis of knee and knee joints damaged by other diseases like rheumatoid osteoarthritis, were examined.

He said total knee-replacement is a new technique where articular surface damanged by osteoarthritis due to old age and rheumatoid arthritis are replaced by a stainless steel joint. After three to six weeks, the patient can walk about with support, he added.
