BRUSSELS, SEPT 4: Wilson Kipketer and Gabriela Szabo stayed in the hunt for the million dollar Golden League bonus here at the Grand Prix meeting last evening winning the 800m and 3000m respectively to leave them two races away from taking $ 500,000 each. However, it was Kenyan 3000m steeplechaser Bernard Barmasai who really made a point. The man who, on Monday, was barred from sharing in the bonus by the sport's governing body IAAF because he had asked his compatriot Christopher Koskei to let him win in Zurich, cantered home 40m ahead of his closest pursuer - Koskei. The 25-year-old, who is still the world record-holder but could only finish fifth behind Koskei in the World Championships in Seville, raised his hand and wagged his finger in the air as he crossed the line as if to say the matter was not over - although he said he held no grudges. However, his manager is reported to be considering legal action should the Kenyan win in next Golden League meet in Berlin and then Grand Prix final in Munichon September 11.Kipketer ran the fastest race this year. The 28-year-old Kenyan-born Dane went clear with 200m to go and despite Hezekiel Sepeng clawing back some of the deficit, he was still five metres clear at the line. Sepeng had the consolation of breaking the South African record.Michael Johnson showed 200m Olympic champion Maurice Greene he had plenty to do as the 31-year-old `Waco Express' coasted to victory in 19.93s.Moroccan Hicham el Guerrouj found fatigue get the better of him as his bid to break Daniel Komen's 3000m world record failed. Bruny Surin and Dwain Chambers, the silver and bronze 100m medallists from the World Championships, enjoyed differing fortunes as Surin rebounded from a poor start to edge Jon Drummond while Chambers finished down the field after an even worse start.Noah Ngeny ran away with the 1500m in the absence of arch-rival el Guerrouj, cantering home clear of compatriots Benson Koech and Laban Rotich.American 110m hurdler Mark Crear, who was disqualified inthe second round for two false starts, overcame his World Championship disappointment to win the event here.
