In a move to win over disgruntled partymen, Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri has brought 28 new government boards outside the purview of the Office of Profit Act. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Monday evening.

Sources said the disgruntled MLAs had rejected most of the 23 posts brought out of the ambit of the Act last month, saying they were inconsequential and the important institutions still had bureaucrats in the driver8217;s seat. The new list includes only 10 of the posts brought outside the purview of the Act earlier. The earlier list has been cancelled.

However, the decision has come in for criticism from the Congress. Senior Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana said, 8220;The BJP is now resorting to acts about which it had been levelling allegations against the Congress. We question the motive behind this decision? They had carried out a campaign against the Congress on the same issue. They should now tender a public apology for having misled the people.8221;

The move by Khanduri is being viewed as an exercise to appease his dissidents, many of whom were unhappy at not being appointed to top posts of important public bodies.

Incidentally, the Cabinet decision came on the day Khanduri8217;s bete noir Bhagat Singh Koshyari filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls. A state Government spokesperson said any legal formality to take these positions out of the purview of the Act would be undertaken by the respective departments. Initially, Khanduri had allocated more than 40 posts for senior party leaders.

However, the MLAs felt sidelined after the party high command put a ban on further allocations of such posts.
