Keep it cool, says Madugalle

It’s an honour with which the ICC have entrusted me and I’m well aware of the importance of the series’’, Ranjan Madugalle said today. As first reported in this paper, the highly respected Sri Lankan match referee has been appointed by the ICC to officiate in the ice-breaking resumption of India’s ties with Pakistan next week.

And Madugalle is familiar with these encounters. He defused a highly emotional confrontation in the 1997 series when in charge of the game between India and Pakistan at Karachi.

The Indians walked off after spectators threw objects at them (see box).

‘‘A lot has happened since that incident — for one thing the game has moved a long way forward since then’’, he said, speaking from his Colombo home. ‘‘I also have no doubt that the spectators as well as the players will be aware of the seriousness of this series and the impact it is going to have on the game, and not just on the sub-continent. Millions throughout the world will be watching ane we are well aware of that.’’

Madugalle explained his method of officiating. ‘‘I make my policy quite clear to all before the series starts, and that is dialogue at all times. It is so important that we all work together towards providing the best for the spectators as well as the players.’’ His role, he said, was not that of a judge but something far simpler. ‘‘What I do is to help the teams and players overcome all their worries and problems. But I have to emphasise that the most important aspect of this job is one of communication.’’

He agreed there would be pressure, but if those involved worked together then half the battle would be won. For obvious reasons he declined to comment on the umpires selected to handle the most important Tests in a decade but ICC officials in London felt those named were the top men on the Emirates Elite panel.

Simon Taufel is now regarded along with David Shepherd, Rudi Koertzen and Steve Bucknor as the top umpires at Test and limited-overs international level. As an official explained, the names had not been drawn out of a hat. Only those who can take pressure have been selected.
