Even as Williams F1 have made it official that Austrian Alexander Wurz will be their test and reserve driver for the forthcoming season, hopes of Narain Karthikeyan making it to the Oxfordshire based team remain.
While sources speculate that Wurz, a five-season tester for McLaren, will be a Williams regular driver in 2007 it is two, not one, tester that they were looking for. This simply means that Narain has a chance.
It is known from the very outset that Narain was the one Sir Frank Williams eyed for the finances going by the fact that the team desperately needed money after computer giants Hewlett Packard pulled out. Wurz, 31, is believed will be paid instead.
With the belief that Wurz is a better bet for the role based on his experience 8212; which includes Williams8217; testing programme in general 8212; the team in its bid to make a challenge to the championship needs a four-driver work force. This, because, Williams, who finished fifth last year, are now entitled to run a third car on Fridays and in the case of uncertainty will deputise for Australian Mark Webber or Germany8217;s Nico Rosberg.
The Austrian8217;s appointment may have dashed the hopes of Narain, but the fact that the Indian was called up for two test programmes it self mean he had potential that earned him a call.
For Narain Wurz news is another wait for another announcement. Williams media in-charge Clare Wiliams, though safe guarded told The Indian Express: 8220;Wurz announcement does not mean Narain is not on the radar8221;.
Now that8217;s hope if not good news.
